Mr. Preston’s Science Excursion

Recently, Mr. Preston’s Year 8 science class went on an excursion to Sydney University to learn about metabolic health. To do their experiments, they went inside the Charles Perkins building. They studied nine different samples of things measured in height, blood pressure, jump height, weight and waist measurements. Then they got to go up to a place called X-labs where they got to complete DNA related experiments such as extracting the DNA from a strawberry.

I think this excursion was important because it showed students first-hand what it’s like in a science space and gave them the opportunity to use proper equipment to find the results of their experiments.

QandA with Karys Werstalk Yr 12

1. Who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Karys and I am a year 12 student. I moved to Sydney in January of 2023, however I grew up in Coffs Harbour. I also spent a significant amount of time of my childhood living in Krakow, Poland.

2. What do you do in the Newstown team?

On the Newstown team, I am a publisher. As a publishing and graphic design team, we design the website and orchestrate the release of the newspaper to share with the Newtown school community.

3. What are you looking forward to and what are you dreading, this school year?

As this is my final year of high school, I am both excited for and dreading the end of my high school career. As daunting the future seems, I’m very excited to enjoy this year alongside my friends and classmates. I’m obviously dreading sitting my HSC exams, but knowing that my peers are experiencing the hardship alongside me helps put my mind at ease and makes me feel less isolated.

4. What advice would you give to a student new to NHSPA this year?

I would encourage new Newtown students to branch out and make lots of friends! Newtown grants such a special and unique opportunity to connect with other students who are interested in and passionate about the performing arts.
