Mission Statement

Hello Newtown! This is Meri Tinkler-Smith and Amy Forchert, your editors in chief for Newstown 2024, prefects for Communications and Community Engagement and two students passionate about connecting the school community through student led journalism. This newspaper is all about work for students by students: a chance to create and share what we think should be written. And the other great thing about the newspaper? It changes with us. So expect a dynamic and exciting place for your news, stories, insight and much more.

The student newspaper was established by the past prefects Tigerlily Gledhill and Annabel Wu, who created a promising foundation which we hope to nurture, allowing it to flourish into a vibrant and celebrated chronicle of the passionate, creative NHSPA student community.

This issue is all about our team, getting to know us and giving you a taste of this year’s student journalists’ writing styles, interests and ideas. So, sit back and enjoy this bite-sized publication debuting our new team of passionate writers.

Debut Volume 1 Contributors

My name is Astrid Macarthur Mitchell, I’m in Year 8 and I have recently joined the school newspaper team. I’m so excited to interview and journal about all the incredible achievements that happen in this school. I hope that eventually Newstown will become a crucial part of our school and a way for students to keep up with the new information happening around us. I have chosen the journalist role, which is a way I can write and tell stories that matter to not just parents and teachers, but also our friends and peers.

I‘m Eva, a year 12 student, Socialist and English nerd. I‘m interested in the political and literary world and excited to write creatively and informatively. I am fascinated with the exploration of the power inherent in ordinary people, including the resistance and resilience of highschoolers. I therefore seek to expand my knowledge and experience as a member of the student newspaper, exploring the worlds of students, politics and literature. As well I am excited for the experience to work with other peers and students creatively.

I’m Lucia and I am in year 8 this year. Working in the newspaper, I am excited to write about a variety of different topics and go out of my comfort zone and venture into other topics I otherwise wouldn’t consider. I joined the newspaper to write in a group and possibly read about different things, take on more responsibility and practice time management.

Hi, my name is James Hillier. I am a flute player as well as a creative writer. I have taken up the job as one of the many journalists contributing to the Newstown paper. I am excited to contribute my creative and persuasive writing skills to bring some light onto serious subject matters globally and within Australia. This may include environmental and social problems around the world. I am also excited to write on any event that is upcoming around the school such as Wear it Purple day. I joined the newspaper to expand and broaden my skills as well as to inform the general public.

I am Brian Lim, and I am a Year 9 (Year 10 next year) musician, writer and artist and a journalist for the Newstown Student Newspaper! I play the euphonium and piano, write and occasionally draw. I am excited to write about almost anything, as I believe the student’s worlds should be noticed by others too, with this school’s amazing students, art forms and friendly staff. I joined the newspaper because it’ll help expand the student’s world, perspectives and inspiration to others.
